As parents, you want the best for your child’s health, and that includes their oral well-being. Did you know that both our office and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend that your child pays their first visit to the dentist by their first birthday? Starting dental visits early not only helps establish good oral hygiene habits but also ensures your child’s dental health gets off to a great start. Here’s how you can make that first visit enjoyable and positive:

Introducing Your Child to the Dentist

It’s important to talk to your child about their upcoming dentist visit in a positive and reassuring manner. Let them know that the dentist and their friendly staff will explain everything that’s going to happen during the visit. Avoid using words that might cause unnecessary fear, such as “needle,” “shot,” “pull,” “drill,” or “hurt.” At our office, we choose words that convey the same information in a pleasant and non-frightening way, so your child feels at ease.

Staying Involved

During your child’s initial examination, we encourage you to stay with them. This helps your child feel more comfortable and secure, knowing that you’re there to support them. For future appointments, we suggest letting your child accompany our staff through the dental experience. This can often help establish a closer rapport with your child, as they might feel more at ease without the added pressure of having a parent present.

Building Confidence and Overcoming Apprehension

Our primary goal is to build your child’s confidence and overcome any dental apprehensions they might have. We understand that the dental environment can be overwhelming for young patients, which is why we strive to create a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. By allowing your child to experience the dental procedures in a positive and supportive environment, we aim to foster a sense of trust and comfort.

Accompanying Your Child to the Treatment Room

While we recommend letting your child venture into the treatment room independently, we understand that each child is unique. If you feel more comfortable accompanying your child during their treatment, you’re more than welcome to do so. However, for the safety and privacy of all our patients, we kindly request that other children who are not being treated remain in the reception room under the supervision of an adult.
